RECAP: Women’s Basketball Drops PSAC East Road Game at Kutztown

SU cannot overcome decisive second-quarter run by the Golden Bears

The Shippensburg University women's basketball team could not contain home-standing Kutztown on Saturday, as the Raiders fell to the hot-shooting Golden Bears by a 97-62 score in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup from Keystone Arena.

Shippensburg (10-12, 6-8 PSAC) experienced foul trouble in the first half, as all five starters were whistled for two fouls within the first 14 minutes of the game. Kutztown (12-9, 10-4) responded by out-scoring the Raiders by a 24-3 margin in the second quarter and limiting SU without a field goal in the frame. The Golden Bears flipped a two-point deficit after the first quarter into an insurmountable 19-point halftime advantage.

KU shot 56 percent from the field, including 14-of-28 (50 percent) from three-point range, and 81 percent (17-of-21) at the free-throw line. The Golden Bears made 10 three-pointers in the second half, and had four different players finish with at least three three-pointers.

Sophomore Ariel Jones led the Raiders with 17 points, making 10-of-12 at the free-throw line. Jones added three rebounds, three assists and equaled a career-high with two blocks. She moved into fifth on the PSAC's single-season made free throws list (195), making 10 or more free throws in a game for the eighth time this season.

Freshman Lauren Pettis nearly had a double-double, finishing with nine points, eight rebounds and two assists. Pettis equaled a career high with five free throws; she was 5-of-6 at the free-throw line.

Sophomore Kryshell Gordy totaled seven points and five rebounds, while freshmen Aunbrielle Green and Lauren Mills each scored six points.

Redshirt-sophomore Lindsay Embly scored nine points off the bench, and she equaled a career high with five free throws on six attempts. Freshman Jacquelynne Baker tallied her first collegiate points, finishing with five on 2-of-2 shooting.

Kutztown had five players in double figures, with Zoe Zerman scoring 17 points in 15 minutes off the bench. Brianna Tarabocchia and Rylee Derr each added 16 points. The Golden Bears also scored 33 points off 27 SU turnovers.
