RECAP: Softball Finishes Successful Weekend With 6-1 Win Over Georgian Court

Coy goes 3-for-3 with home run, 4 RBIs; Wilson strikes out career-high 13 hitters

The Shippensburg University softball team capped off a successful weekend in Myrtle Beach on Sunday morning with a 6-1 victory over Georgian Court, posting a 3-1 record over four games played at the 2019 Snowbird Softball Freeze Out.

Shippensburg (4-4) bested a Georgian Court (4-1) squad that was undefeated entering Sunday, including victories over Slippery Rock, Millersville, and a West Virginia State team that beat the Raiders twice two weeks ago at UNC-Pembroke. SU cranked out 10 hits and scored in three different innings in Sunday's win.

Senior Taryn Wilson threw a complete game in the circle, striking out a career-high 13 batters. Wilson yielded just one run, four hits and two walks – she struck out six of the final eight batters she faced. It is the second time this season and the 10th time in her career that Wilson has finished a game with 10 or more strikeouts.

At the plate, sophomore Courtney Coy completed a torrid weekend by going 3-for-3 with a home run, double and four RBIs. Coy smacked a two-run double in the third before clobbering a two-run home run in the fifth – the first round-tripper of her collegiate career.

Coy finished the weekend with a .692 batting average (9-of-13) with six extra-base hits and six runs scored.

Junior Meghan Klee opened the scoring for the Raiders with an RBI-double in the first inning. Klee also had a terrific weekend at the plate, posting a .583 batting average (7-of-12) over four games with six RBIs, a stolen base and three runs scored.

The top four women in the Raider batting order had eight of SU's 10 hits in Sunday's game. Junior leadoff batter Kayla Bonawitz was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while freshman Morgan DeFeo was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Freshman Grace Palmieri delivered an RBI-single up the middle in a three-run third inning, and Wilson added a single as well.

Overall, in SU's four games in Myrtle Beach, the Raiders committed just one error – posting a .990 fielding percentage. The Raiders batted .342 as a team with 39 hits (including 13 doubles), out-scoring the opposition 26-12.
