SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Gabriella Johnson became the eighth player in school history to record at least 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career as the Shippensburg University volleyball team defeated Kutztown, 3-1, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Heiges Field House. Set scores were 30-32, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-14.
Shippensburg (20-4, 12-1 PSAC) slammed 66 kills and hit .262 as it extended its win streak to five consecutive matches. Johnson achieved a career high with 20 kills to become the 11th player in school history to surpass the 1,000 career kills mark. Her 19 digs on the night marked her 14th double-double of the season for kills and digs and the 38th of her career.
Four Raiders finished with double-digit kills. Senior
Samantha Webber had 14 kills, two dynamic solo blocks and hit .353 over 34 attempts. Fellow senior
Kendall Johnson hit .429, crunching 10 kills and just one error over 21 swings. She teamed up with junior
Alana Pergine for SU's four other blocks of the night.
Junior
Gianna Sigado had 10 kills and 15 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Pergine had seven kills and hit .238. Senior
Megan Forstburg had a team-high 20 digs, while redshirt-freshman
Syera McCormick had 14 digs. Both women totaled five assists.
Junior setter
Emily Hangen was all over the scoresheet once again, accruing 48 assists, 19 digs, a pair of aces and four kills without an error on five attempts. SU hit .262 or better in three of the four sets on the night.
Kutztown (9-14, 3-10) hit .288 in the first set and served seven aces against the Raiders. Holly Owen impressed with 20 kills, 15 digs and hit .125 despite a whopping 72 attempts. Erin Patterson added 13 kills for the visitors.
Shippensburg will honor its seniors before a 1 p.m. Saturday matchup against East Stroudsburg from Heiges Field House. It is the final home match of the regular season for the Raiders, who will be on the road for the next two weeks after Saturday's match.
