The Shippensburg University men's basketball team was held to just 21 points over the final 22 minutes of play on Wednesday night, as the Raiders were tripped up on the road by Lock Haven, 59-58, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest from Thomas Fieldhouse.
Shippensburg (14-4, 8-2 PSAC) opened the game on an 18-6 run in the first eight minutes and led by 14 points, 27-13, with 6:45 remaining in the first half. The Raiders could not maintain their traction offensively, however, as they were held scoreless for the final 2:40 of the first half and shot just 25 percent from the field in the second half.
Lock Haven (6-7, 5-5) scratched and clawed its way to a victory despite going 0-for-7 from three-point range in the second half and getting just 16 total minutes from its reserves. The Bald Eagles grabbed their first lead with exactly five minutes remaining, but were once again trailing by three points with 1:31 to go before closing with the final four points.
LHU committed just nine fouls, resulting in only six free-throw attempts for the Raiders (SU was 6-for-6), and held Shippensburg below 60 points for the first time this season. The Raiders also finished with season lows in assists (10) and offensive rebounds (seven).
Senior
Antonio Kellem was the consistent scorer for SU on Wednesday evening, finishing with 22 points while making 5-of-10 from three-point range. Kellem equaled a season high with nine rebounds and made three of SU's six free throws on the night.
Junior
John Castello was the only other Raider in double figures. Castello scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-2 from three-point range. Castello also had seven rebounds.
SU's third-leading scorer was junior
Daylon Carter, who added eight points off the bench. Redshirt-freshman
Dom Sleva added six points, six rebounds and three assists off the bench.
Sophomore
Jake Biss finished with six points, six rebounds and three assists, while redshirt-senior
Manny Span was held to two points, three rebounds and two assists.
Overall, Shippensburg was 10-for-30 (33 percent) from three-point range, marking the 11th time this season it has hit double-digit three-pointers in a game. Lock Haven finished 29 percent from long range after making 5-of-10 from three-point range in the first half. SU fell to 5-2 in games decided by six points or less this season and 12-3 when leading at the half.
Christian Kelly paced the Bald Eagles with 19 points, scoring 16 of those points in the first half. Matt Cerruti, who made the game-winning layup with five seconds remaining, scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half. All 59 of Lock Haven's points were scored by its starters.
