RECAP: Men’s Basketball Dominates the Glass to Defeat Mansfield, 91-65

Castello becomes SU’s 33rd men’s player to reach 1,000 career points

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team had five players post double figures Wednesday night and scored a season-high 31 second-chance points in defeating Mansfield, 91-65, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup from Heiges Field House.

Shippensburg (15-4, 9-2 PSAC) posted a 51-28 edge in rebounding over Mansfield (1-16, 0-12). The Raiders nearly recorded as many offensive rebounds (24) as the Mountaineers did total rebounds – the 24 offensive rebounds are the most in a game in 10 years (26 vs. Bloomsburg on Feb. 18, 2009).

SU matched a season low by making just five three-pointers, shooting a season-low 19 percent from long range, but overcame that with a season-high 58 points in the paint – its most in a single game since the 2015-16 season opener. The Raiders also committed just five turnovers, marking the sixth time this season the team has committed less than 10 turnovers in a game.

With 16:11 remaining, Shippensburg unleashed a 21-7 run to transform a 13-point lead into a lofty 27-point advantage. SU never trailed in Wednesday's victory, and led by as many as 28 points with 5:54 remaining.

The Raiders got double-doubles from junior John Castello and redshirt-freshman Dom Sleva. Castello became the 33rd men's player in school history to reach 1,000 career points, totaling 20 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and zero turnovers in 27 minutes of action. Sleva, in his first career start, had 10 points and 10 rebounds, marking his fifth time in double figures this season.

Castello becomes the second SU men's player to reach the 1,000-point mark this season, as senior Antonio Kellem achieved the feat in the season opener. Wednesday marked Castello's eighth career game with 20 points and was his eighth double-double of the year (25th of career). It was Sleva's first career double-double.

Kellem had 14 points, five rebounds and two steals. It was his 16th game in double figures this season and the 71st of Kellem's career. Sophomore Jake Biss posted double figures for the 17th time in 19 games this season, scoring 15 points while adding five assists, three steals and committing just one turnover.

Two players had career highs off the bench. Freshman Carlos Carter was all over the floor, posting double figures for the first time with career highs of 12 points and eight rebounds in just 19 minutes. Carter had not made multiple field goals in a game yet this season, but finished Wednesday 6-of-12 from the field.

Freshman Dion Harris II had totaled just 11 minutes this season entering Wednesday; he exceled in a 19-minute performance with career highs of nine points and seven rebounds on 4-of-5 shooting. Harris scored six of his nine points in the second half.

Also off the bench, redshirt-sophomore Derek Ford scored seven points on 3-of-3 – he is now 8-of-8 from the field this season in his six games of action. Junior Daylon Carter added four points and two rebounds. Junior Lamar Talley was kept off the scoresheet but grabbed four rebounds.

Mansfield got 17 points from Tyler Moffe, while Eli Alvin added 13 points off the bench in the second half. The Mountaineers made nine three-pointers on the night.
