SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Redshirt-senior forward
Manny Span led a group of five Raiders in double figures on Saturday with a career-high 23 points as the Shippensburg University men's basketball team dropped rival Kutztown, 100-85, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (14-3, 8-1 PSAC) made most of what it attempted on Saturday, shooting 49 percent from the field (including 58.6 percent in the second half), 39 percent from three-point range and 80 percent from the free-throw line. SU made 11 three-pointers, marking the 10th time this season it has finished a game with at least 10 three-pointers, and only missed two of its 18 free-throw attempts over the final 20 minutes.
The Raiders also totaled 20 assists – one off the season high – and committed just 11 turnovers in a return to their disciplined efficiency on offense. SU also posted a 41-31 edge in rebounds, grabbing 17 offensive rebounds.
Kutztown (10-7, 4-5) got a game-high 39 points from Anthony Lee on an efficient 16-of-21 shooting, marking just the third opposing player over the last five seasons to exceed 30 points against the Raiders. Lee's performance marks the most points by an opposing player since Lock Haven's Wali Hepburn dropped 40 points on Dec. 2, 2012.
Shippensburg had an early 11-2 run to take a 21-10 lead at the 12:46 mark of the first half. Kutztown responded, eventually taking a one-point lead (28-27) with 7:24 left in the half. The Raiders responded with a 15-4 run to gain another double-digit lead, eventually leading by seven (45-38) at halftime.
With 12:33 remaining, KU used a 10-2 run to get within four points of the Raiders, 69-65. SU countered with a 15-2 run over the next four minutes to pull away, getting eight points from Span and five from Carter during the decisive stretch of play.
Span was marvelous on Saturday; he was 11-of-13 from the field and posted his fifth game in double figures this season. His previous career high in scoring was 14 points, set earlier this season against Chestnut Hill. He also added eight rebounds – four offensive and four defensive. Saturday marked Span's 98th career game as a Raider, and the first time that he has ever led Shippensburg in scoring in a game.
Senior
Antonio Kellem matched a career high with six three-pointers, finishing with 22 points, four rebounds and four assists with zero turnovers in 35 minutes. Kellem, who made his 100th career start on Saturday, was 6-of-10 from three-point range and exceeded 20 points in a game for the sixth time this season (13th time in career). It was the third time in his career he made six three-pointers.
Junior
John Castello notched his seventh double-double of the season and the 24th of his career with 19 points and 11 rebounds while equaling a career high with three steals. Castello went 12-of-12 at the free-throw line, tying the second-best rate at the free-throw line in a single game by an SU player.
His free-throw performance is the best since
Justin McCarthur set the SU single-game record last season by making 15-of-15 against Bloomsburg. Prior to Saturday, Castello's most free throws made in a game was five, achieved on four occasions.
Sophomore
Jake Biss was all-around sound once again – scoring 14 points, finishing one shy of his career high with seven assists, and equaling a career high with six rebounds. Biss also committed just one turnover, marking the ninth time this season he has committed two turnovers or less in a game.
Junior
Daylon Carter was a huge spark off the bench as the fifth Raider in double figures. Carter was one point shy of his career high, scoring 14 on 4-of-8 shooting and 5-of-7 at the free-throw line. He also equaled career highs with five rebounds and four assists in 17 minutes of action.
Freshman
Carlos Carter had three points and two assists off the bench, while redshirt-freshman
Dom Sleva made a three-pointer on his only shot attempt. Junior
Lamar Talley had two points and three rebounds.
Shippensburg extended its winning streak to three games and moved one-half game ahead of idle East Stroudsburg to claim the top spot in the PSAC Eastern Division. The Raiders are idle next Saturday after they travel to Lock Haven for a game on Wednesday night.
Saturday marked the third time this season that SU had five players reach double figures in a game; the Raiders also achieved the feat in the season opener against Virginia Union and later against Chestnut Hill (six in double figures).
UP NEXT: Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. at Lock Haven.
