SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team dropped its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener on Friday, suffering a 2-0 setback to visiting Gannon on a cloudy, breezy afternoon at David See Field.
Shippensburg (4-2-0, 0-1-0 PSAC) posted a 15-14 advantage in shots, 8-7 edge in shots on goal, and a 7-4 margin in corner kicks, but Gannon (3-3-0, 3-0-0) made the most of two chances and got eight saves from keeper Hedi Mehnaoui for the victory.
The Raiders played a solid first half with three corner kicks and five shots on goal; however, it was Gannon that earned the first scoring opportunity just two minutes into the game and took advantage.
Chad Barrick took a header off a cross, which was saved by Raider goalkeeper
Garret Watson, but Barrick won his own rebound and sent a second shot that found the back of the net.
Gannon's second goal came in the 72nd minute. The Golden Knights developed a nifty passing play at midfield, allowing Declan Bingham to thread a cross for Ivan Manfredi to send home.
Watson made five saves in the contest for the Raiders, all in the first half.
Cole Kropnick led Shippensburg's offensive efforts, taking five shots, landing two on goal.
The teams combined for 38 fouls and seven yellow cards.
