SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Izzy Weigel scored a goal in the 80th minute on Saturday to propel the Shippensburg University women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent Clarion on an interesting afternoon at David See Field.
Both Shippensburg (4-1, 3-1 PSAC) and Clarion (0-6, 0-6) had plenty of scoring opportunities in the first half, including shots for both teams that bounced off the crossbar. The Golden Eagles took 10 shots in the first 45 minutes of play, forcing Raider goalkeeper
Delaney Shifflett to make six saves.
It was Weigel's fourth goal of the year that proved decisive. A Raider free kick found freshman
K.K. O'Donnell in front of the net. O'Donnell's touch found Weigel, who found the back of the net. It is Weigel's second game-winning goal of the season.
Shifflett, who totaled eight saves, earned her third shutout of the season and the fifth solo shutout of her career.
Shippensburg finished with a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks, with a 5-0 margin in the second half.
The match was a bit peculiar to those watching in person, as Clarion traveled without its uniforms. The Golden Eagles wore Shippensburg's navy road uniforms in the contest, resulting in two sets of Raider jerseys on the pitch.
UP NEXT: Friday, 4:30 p.m. vs. Gannon.
