SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team opened its season Thursday with a convincing 3-0 victory over Shepherd in a non-conference matchup on a hot and steamy afternoon at David See Field.
Shippensburg (1-0) posted a 16-2 advantage in shots and took control in the final 22 minutes of play with a pair of late goals. The Raiders received the third career solo shutout from sophomore goalkeeper
Delaney Shifflett.
Senior
Beth McGee had two assists, while junior
Izzy Weigel had a goal and an assist.
Freshman
K.K. O'Donnell opened the scoring in the 19th minute by touching home a splendid cross from McGee. O'Donnell nudged the ball past the drawn-out Ram goalkeeper and steered it off the post and over the goal line for the first tally.
After a hydration break midway through the second half, SU capitalized with a passing play that resulted in McGee's second assist and the first goal of the year for Weigel. McGee took a pass from
Mara Bowman and crossed a ball onto the head of a charging Weigel, who knocked it home to make it 2-0 Raiders.
The final tally came seven minutes later, as sophomore
Taylor Moore scored her first of the season off a center through ball from Weigel.
