SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team dropped its season opener Thursday to visiting Chestnut Hill, dropping a 3-1 matchup to the Griffins on a hot and humid evening at David See Field.
Shippensburg (0-1) and Chestnut Hill (1-0) were scoreless at the half, but the Griffins got on the board first in the 54th minute and then added two more tallies in the final 10 minutes of play to seal the victory.
Senior forward
Cole Kropnick added a goal in the final second of the match on a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box to result in SU's lone goal of the night.
The teams played a similar game on paper, with both teams registering 18 shots while Chestnut Hill drew five corners to SU's four.
Redshirt-junior goalkeeper
Garret Watson put forth a solid effort, stopping six shots on the night in the loss.
Both teams were extremely aggressive in the contest, combining for 23 fouls in the half alone. The Raiders committed 30 fouls in the match, while the Griffins committed nine, as the blistering heat factored into the play style.
