JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team was eliminated from the 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on a warm Saturday afternoon after an 11-1 loss to Seton Hill in seven innings at Point Stadium.
Â
Shippensburg (28-24) was playing its fourth nine-inning game in four days and could not stave off the suddenly torrid offensive production of Seton Hill (30-20), as the Griffins cranked out 17 hits against the Raider arms. Seton Hill, who has scored 38 runs in three tournament games, will face Millersville for the conference championship.
Â
Redshirt-sophomore
Zack Sims got the start on short rest but faced just five batters. Junior
Michael Hope, also on limited rest, threw 3.1 innings of relief. Hope struck out two. Sophomore
Kyle Lysy was strong out of the bullpen, throwing 2.1 innings with two strikeouts. Freshman
Dalton Oates faced the final batter.
Â
Shippensburg's lone run came in the fifth inning, as junior
Tommy Baggett led off with a double and freshman
Scout Knotts singled him home two batters later. SU got seven base-runners in the game but grounded into three double plays.
Â
In four PSAC Tournament games, sophomore
Jacob Pollock paced the club with a .417 average (5-for-12) and a .533 on-base percentage. Junior
Jack Goertzen had five hits and drew three walks in the tournament, while Knotts was 5-for-15 and tied for the team lead with five RBIs in the four games.
Â
Senior
Dalton Hoiles was 6-for-16 (.375) with three doubles and five RBIs. His 22 doubles this season ties the SU single-season record originally set by Bill Dobrolsky in 1991. Junior
Cash Gladfelter, completed the tournament by extending his streak of consecutive games reaching base to 27-in-a-row.
Â
Shippensburg now awaits to see if it earns an at-large selection into this year's NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament field. The Raiders have played 34 of their 52 games this season against teams that have been in the NCAA regional rankings this season. This year's selection show airs at 10 p.m. Sunday on ncaa.com.
