Softball Drops Regular-Season Finales at ESU in Advance of Postseason

SU will see on Sunday whether it earns East No. 2 or No. 3 seed

The Shippensburg University softball team completed its regular season Saturday and came up short in a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division games at East Stroudsburg, falling 4-3 and 10-5 to the Warriors in competition from Zimbar Field.

Shippensburg (21-17, 8-8 PSAC East) has clinched a spot in next week's PSAC Tournament but its seed is still to be determined. SU must await a Sunday result – the resumption of play between Millersville and West Chester in Game 2 of a doubleheader. The two teams were in progress at Millersville before weather halted play with WCU leading 5-0 in the third inning.

A West Chester victory would give Shippensburg the Eastern Division No. 2 seed and a PSAC Tournament matchup with Seton Hill (West No. 2 seed) at 3 p.m. Wednesday. A Millersville victory would give Shippensburg the Eastern Division No. 3 seed and a PSAC Tournament matchup with Lock Haven (Central No. 1 seed) at noon Wednesday.

On Saturday, both Shippensburg and East Stroudsburg (14-26, 6-10) recorded 20 hits in the doubleheader. The Raiders struck out just once at the plate while smacking six extra-base hits.

Senior Tara Bicko was once again marvelous at the plate. Bicko was 4-for-8 with a home run, double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Courtney Coy had three hits, including a pair of doubles, to go along with three RBIs and a run scored.

In 16 conference games this season, Bicko hit .377 with a .431 on-base percentage – totaling eight extra-base hits, five RBIs, five walks and scoring 18 runs as SU's leadoff hitter. Coy led the Raiders with 13 RBIs in conference games this season.

Freshman Katie Wise reached base four times on the day despite starting just one of the two games. Wise was 3-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base. Senior Macy Luck and sophomore Micaela Ghanayem each had two hits and an RBI. Sophomore Kayla Bonawitz had a double, single and scored three runs.

Junior Taryn Wilson, senior Chloe Collins and Coy each pitched in the doubleheader. Wilson threw a complete game in the opener, striking out five. Collins, the Game 2 starter, and Coy each struck out a batter in the nightcap.

East Stroudsburg achieved its first home doubleheader sweep over Shippensburg since 1996. The Warriors celebrated their Senior Day and got 10 combined hits from its three seniors. ESU also stole eight bases on the day.
