SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team played its third doubleheader in as many days on Sunday, with the Raiders posting a split with Pittsburgh-Johnstown in a non-conference twinbill from Robb Field. UPJ won the opener, 2-1, while SU took the nightcap, 5-3.
Â
Shippensburg (19-15) and Pitt-Johnstown (10-20) each recorded 16 hits on the day. Junior
Taryn Wilson and senior
Chloe Collins each threw complete games for the Raiders, with Wilson suffering the hard-luck Game 1 loss despite striking out nine, while Collins took a shutout in the seventh inning of Game 2 and recorded four strikeouts in the Game 2 win.
Â
The Raider 9-1-2 hitters – senior
Anna Warfield, senior
Tara Bicko and sophomore
Kayla Bonawitz, combined to reach base 12 times on the day. Warfield was 3-for-4 with an RBI, two walks and two runs scored. Bicko was 4-for-8 with a double and two RBIs, while Bonawitz was 3-for-7 with two doubles, an RBI and a stolen base.
Â
In Game 1, Shippensburg gained a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Bicko hit a ball between first and second that ricocheted off a lunging fielder's glove and into the outfield to score Warfield. The decisive hit of the game, however, came in the fifth – when UPJ catcher Stacey Walling sent a 1-1 pitch into the left-center field gap for a two-run double with two outs.
Â
The Raiders mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh, getting two runners on with one out, but a caught stealing resulted in the second out. Warfield singled to load the bases and put the winning run into scoring position, but a hard line-out by Bicko was caught by UPJ left fielder Marley Elbin to end the game.
Â
In Game 2, Shippensburg scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take control. Collins led off the frame with a single and then stole second before freshman
Katie Wise singled her home with a shot up the middle.
Â
A sacrifice bunt by senior
Macy Luck moved Wise to third with one out. Following a groundout, Warfield dropped a bunt single down in front of home that allowed Wise to score and Warfield to get to second after the throw went awry.
Â
Bicko and Bonawitz then followed with back-to-back RBI-doubles to chase UPJ starter Sam Frey. SU added another run in the fourth on a wild pitch. Collins ran into trouble in the circle in the seventh inning, yielding three straight hits with two outs that allowed the Mountain Cats to bring the tying run to the plate, but a groundout ended the game.
Â
Overall, Luck went 1-for-2 with a pair of stolen bases in Game 2. She started at catcher in the nightcap after sophomore
Micaela Ghanayem was the Game 1 backstop. Freshman
Courtney Coy singled twice. Wise was 2-for-4 in her Game 2 start in right field.
