The Shippensburg University softball team competed in five games this weekend at the annual West Virginia Wesleyan Softball Classic and posted a 4-1 record. The Raiders won two games on both Friday and Saturday before dropping their Sunday morning finale.

Shippensburg (9-5) began the tournament Friday with a 1-0 victory over West Liberty and a 2-1 victory in eight innings over Winston-Salem State. On Saturday, the Raiders achieved a 5-1 victory over Concord and a 5-0 victory over Wheeling Jesuit. On Sunday, the Raiders dropped a rematch with the Hilltoppers, 6-4.

At the top of the SU order, senior
Tara Bicko and sophomore
Kayla Bonawitz were reaching base rather frequently. Bonawitz hit .750 (12-for-16) with two RBIs, two runs and three sacrifices. Bicko hit .667 (10-for-15) with a homer, double, seven runs, four walks and two sacrifices.

Sophomore
Micaela Ghanayem led the Raiders this weekend with five RBIs. She hit .462 at the plate (6-of-13) with two doubles.

Shippensburg 1, West Liberty 0 (Friday)
The lone run of the day came in walk-off fashion with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior
Anna Warfield drew a walk, and Bicko and Bonawitz followed with singles. With Collins at the plate, Warfield scored on a passed ball to end the game.

Junior
Taryn Wilson got the victory in the circle. Wilson allowed just two hits in the complete game shutout but walked seven. She also had seven strikeouts.

Shippensburg 2, Winston-Salem State 1 (Friday)
The Raiders got on the board in the first inning with Bicko hitting a leadoff double and scoring on an error. The Rams tied it in the sixth on an unearned run, but the Raiders rallied in the international tiebreaker for an eighth-inning win and their second walk-off of the day. Bonawitz delivered a one-out sacrifice fly to score Bicko.

Senior
Chloe Collins threw a complete game in the circle for the win. She scattered four hits, walked three and struck out eight without allowing an earned run.

Shippensburg 5, Concord 1 (Saturday)
Shippensburg scored two runs in the first and three runs in the third to stake out its early advantage. In the first, sophomore
Kendall Geis delivered a two-out, two-run double that scored Bicko and Bonawitz.

In the third, Ghanayem slammed a two-run double after Bicko had scored earlier in the inning on an error.

Concord's lone run came on an RBI single by Rachel Pritchard in the sixth inning.

Wilson got her second win of the weekend in the circle. She scattered eight hits, walked just one and struck out 11 batters in the victory.

Shippensburg 5, Wheeling Jesuit 0 (Saturday)
After a single from Bicko, a sacrifice from Bonawitz and a single from Collins to start the bottom of the first, Ghanayem delivered an RBI single to put the Raiders ahead. She added another RBI-single in the third inning, and freshman
Bailey Haines came through with a pinch-hit, two-out, two-run single that made it a 4-0 SU lead through three innings.

Bicko homered in the fourth inning to provide the final run of the game for the Raiders. She was 3-for-4 in the game with three runs scored. Collins was 3-for-3 with two stolen bases.

Freshman
Courtney Coy got her first collegiate victory in the circle with complete game shutout. She allowed four hits, walked one and struck out five.

West Liberty 6, Shippensburg 4 (Sunday)
The Raiders had a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Hilltoppers rallied with five runs – including a grand slam – to go ahead.

SU scored in the opening inning for the fourth straight game, as Ghanayem singled home Bicko after an error to lead off the frame. In the third, a sacrifice fly by Geis made it 2-1. Bonawitz singled home senior

Meghan Klee contributed a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

The Hilltoppers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth and hit a grand slam to take a 5-4 lead. West Liberty added another run with an RBI-single in the frame.

Wilson suffered the loss in the circle but struck out 10 batters in the contest.
