The Shippensburg University lacrosse team went on the road Friday for the first time this season and came away with an impressive non-conference victory at Shepherd, defeating the Rams by a 14-6 score on a cool, damp afternoon in West Virginia.
Â
Shippensburg (1-1) raced out to a 4-0 lead through the first 10 minutes of play and led 8-1 with 10:18 remaining in the first half. SU held a 9-4 lead at halftime, but truly took control by coming out of the break and holding the Rams scoreless for the first 18 minutes of the second half.
Â
Shepherd (0-2), who played Roberts Wesleyan last weekend to a 13-12 score just like the Raiders did on Monday, posted a 13-9 edge in draw controls over the Raiders, but committed eight more turnovers.
Â
Freshman goalkeeper
KiKi Brasher was key for the Raiders, making 10 saves to mark her second straight game with double-digit stops.
Â
Nine different Raiders scored at least one goal, while freshman
Alana Cardaci posted a hat trick for the second straight game. Juniors
Morgan Stone,
Kyra Shank and
Madi Newman each scored twice in the contest.
Â
Senior
Allison Fugate had a goal and two assists, while senior
Jordan Kengor and freshmen
Jessica DeMarte,
Jena MacDonald and
Maddy Siejk also found the back of the net.
Â
Junior
Valerie Hertz paced the Raiders with both four groundballs and three draw controls. Freshmen
Kami Holt and
Madi Jones, along with Fugate and Stone, were credited with three groundballs. Holt also had two draw controls. Senior
T.J. Johnson had two caused turnovers.
Â
Shippensburg returns to action a week from today when it travels to Georgian Court for a March 2 matchup against the Lions in New Jersey.
