Men’s Basketball Falls on the Road at West Chester, 78-59

SU drops out of first place in PSAC East with one game remaining

The Shippensburg University men's basketball team was held to a season low in scoring on Wednesday night, as the Raiders dropped a 78-59 decision to host West Chester in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Hollinger Fieldhouse.

Shippensburg (20-6, 16-5 PSAC) and West Chester (21-5, 17-5) entered the game having maintained their respective No. 3 and No. 4 positions in the second edition of the NCAA Atlantic Regional rankings released earlier in the day. With Wednesday's result, the two teams split the season series, each winning on their home floor.

West Chester used an early 10-0 run just three minutes into the game to build a 19-7 lead, and the Golden Rams led by as many as 16 points in the first half. Shippensburg cut its deficit down to five points on multiple occasions in the second half but could get no closer. Multiple 8-0 runs for WCU down the stretch put the game out of reach.

Sophomore John Castello posted his seventh double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Antonio Kellem scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half, making 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Seniors Justin McCarthur and Dustin Sleva each added 10 points.

SU shot just 29.7 percent from the field – its lowest output since a Feb. 12, 2014 against East Stroudsburg (117 games). The Raiders matched a season high with 40 three-point attempts but made just eight – shooting just 20 percent from distance.

By virtue of Wednesday's results, Shippensburg earns the No. 3 seed in the PSAC Eastern Division for the upcoming PSAC Tournament.

Shippensburg hosts Bloomsburg at 3 p.m. Saturday to complete the regular season. McCarthur, Sleva and Clay Conner will be recognized in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony.

Shippensburg will then host East No. 6 seed Millersville on Monday night in a PSAC First Round game.
