Men’s Basketball Gets 60 Points From Seniors in 85-74 Senior Day Win Over Bloom

SU to host PSAC First Round game at 7 p.m. Monday vs. Millersville

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team got 60 combined points from its three seniors Saturday as it completed the regular season with an 85-74 Senior Day victory over Bloomsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup from Heiges Field House.

Shippensburg (21-6, 17-5 PSAC) got a game-high 23 points from senior Justin McCarthur, who set an SU single-game record by going 15-of-15 from the free-throw line. It is the second-best single game performance in PSAC history, ranking only behind Slippery Rock's Cornelius Brown (17-of-17) two seasons ago against Clarion.

Bloomsburg (15-11, 11-11) trailed 22-9 midway through the first half, missing 10 consecutive shots after a three to open the game from Christian Mortellite. The Huskies clawed back late in the half, reducing its deficit to 31-26 at halftime. After a lay-up just 31 seconds into the second half by Kyle-Michael Rose got BU within three points, the Raiders countered with a 19-6 run over the next five minutes to lead by 18 points.

The second half devolved into a free-throw shooting exhibition, but the teams made the most of it. SU and BU combined to commit 25 second-half fouls but make 36-of-41 (87.8 percent) from the line. Shippensburg, ranked fourth in the nation in free-throw shooting, was 18-of-21 (85.7 percent) in the second half and finished the game 25-of-29 (86 percent) from the line. Bloomsburg was 21-of-25 (84 percent), including 18-of-20 (90 percent) in the second half.

The Raiders shot 60 percent (15-of-25) in the second half and made 10-of-21 (47 percent) three-pointers while limiting Bloomsburg to 39-percent shooting from the field. Mortellite, a 2,000-point scorer for the Huskies, finished with just nine points and did not make another three-pointer after his bucket in the first minute of play.

Senior Dustin Sleva scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half and finished with eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals. He was 3-of-6 from three-point range.

Senior Clay Conner scored 18 points, one shy of his career high, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. Conner was 6-of-9 from the field and has assists. He committed just one turnover, marking the 15th time this season he has finished a game with one turnover or less.

Sophomore John Castello posted his second straight double-double and eighth of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Castello was 4-of-5 from the field with two blocks and two steals. Junior Antonio Kellem added seven points and three assists.

Bloomsburg got 21 points from Khary Mauras and a near double-double (16 points, nine rebounds) from Rose. The Huskies got 22 combined bench points from Nicholas King (12) and Matt Kachelries (10) – Kachelries played 31 minutes. BU scored 25 points off 18 SU turnovers.

Shippensburg completes its regular season with a perfect 14-0 record at Heiges Field House. Over the last three seasons, the Raiders are 41-3 in home games, including 18 straight victories.

The Raiders also completed the regular season by making at least 10 three-pointers in 19 of their 27 games this season. All five SU starters finished the season having made at least 30 three-pointers and shooting 79 percent or better from the free-throw line.
