SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team scored the final nine points Saturday afternoon to claim a double-digit victory in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener, defeating Seton Hill 77-67 in a wild showdown from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (3-3, 1-0 PSAC) and Seton Hill (3-2, 0-1) exchanged numerous large runs throughout the second half to frequently fluctuate the momentum of the game. Saturday's contest featured 99 combined rebounds and 41 points off turnovers.
With 6:46 left in the third quarter, the Raiders held a 38-27 lead. Seton Hill then unleashed a 19-6 run over the next four-plus minutes to take a two-point lead, 46-44.
SU then immediately responded with a 15-0 run – scoring the final eight points of the third quarter and the first seven points of the fourth quarter to achieve another double-digit lead, 59-46, with 8:24 remaining.
The Griffins then countered with a 13-1 in less than three minutes, getting within a point of the lead at 60-59 with 5:11 left in regulation.
SU would get its lead back up to five points before Seton Hill made it a one-point game again with 1:41 left before its final 9-0 run – of which eight of those points were scored by sophomore
Ariel Jones.
Freshman
Aunbrielle Green achieved her second straight double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Fellow freshman
Lauren Mills scored 12 of her career-high 16 points in the first quarter.
Jones led the Raiders overall with 22 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the field. She did this in just 23 minutes, as she played just three minutes in the first half due to a pair of early fouls.
Freshman
Lauren Pettis scored seven points but also grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds – the most by a Raider in a single game since
Morgan Griffith had the same amount against Saint Michael's on Nov. 13, 2015.
Sophomore
Kryshell Gordy added six points, five rebounds and two blocks. Off the bench, junior
Gianna Locker added a spark with five points, two rebounds and two assists – providing valuable minutes in the first half and also down the stretch.
Seton Hill got a game-high 26 points from Megan Marecic, who finished 6-of-12 from three-point range. Courtney Cecere had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Lexi Civittolo had 13 points and seven steals.
