SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team completed a fourth-quarter comeback Sunday on a go-ahead, three-point play by sophomore
Ariel Jones with five seconds left in regulation to stun visiting Pittsburgh-Johnstown, 69-68, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (4-3, 2-0 PSAC) trailed by seven points at the final media timeout with 4:12 remaining, but closed with 20 points before the final horn. Jones scored 14 of her game-high 34 points in that span, including three three-pointers. She also scored 16 of SU's 22 total points and had four steals in the third quarter.
Pittsburgh-Johnstown (4-3, 1-1) was outstanding at the free-throw line, finishing 88 percent (21-of-24) from the charity stripe. Gabrielle Smith, fresh off a 37-point performance yesterday in Mansfield, had 32 points, five rebounds, five assists and four blocks against the Raiders. She made her first 14 free-throw attempts on the day, but missed her 15th and final attempt with 11 seconds remaining.
After the miss, freshman
Lauren Pettis grabbed the rebound and immediately gave the ball to Jones, who furiously sprinted up the floor and went all the way to the hoop for a successful "and-one" layup. Jones made the free throw to give SU a one-point lead, allowing UPJ one chance to go back on top. After the in-bounds pass, Alli McGrath lost control of the ball, resulting in Jones grabbing it and running out the clock.
Shippensburg scored 49 points in the second half after totaling just 20 in the first half – including just seven points in the first quarter. The Raiders shot 47 percent over the final 20 minutes and finished with 18 second-chance points.
Pettis posted her first career double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds. In two games this weekend, Pettis finished with 34 rebounds. Sophomore
Kryshell Gordy was 6-of-9 from the field, totaling 15 points.
Freshman
Aunbrielle Green managed just two points but grabbed 11 rebounds, while freshman
Lauren Mills chipped in with eight points and three rebounds.
