SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team battled No. 12 University of the Sciences on Wednesday night but could not overcome the disciplined Devils, as the Raiders dropped an 81-66 decision in a non-conference matchup from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (2-3) committed a season-low 16 turnovers and recorded a season-high 15 assists, shooting 46 percent from the field and scoring 40 points in the paint. SU has shot 43 percent or better from the field in all five games this season.
USciences (6-0), an NCAA Sweet 16 team last year that won 30 games, posted 18 assists to just eight turnovers (including just three first-half turnovers) while making 10 three-pointers. The Devils shot 46 percent from the field and 92 percent (11-of-12) at the free-throw line. The visitors also scored 20 points off Raider turnovers.
SU and USciences exchanged the lead eight times in the first quarter and had four ties, but the difference in the game was a 22-10 margin for the Devils in the second quarter. The Raiders played within one point of the visitors in the second half.
Shippensburg freshman post player
Aunbrielle Green recorded career highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 10-of-14 from the field and blocking a pair of shots. Green has now posted double-doubles in back-to-back games.
Sophomore guard
Ariel Jones led the Raiders with 23 points, including a 9-of-10 rate at the free-throw line, to complement three assists, two steals and two rebounds. Jones has scored at least 18 points in all five games this season; Wednesday night marks her 20th career game with 20 or more points.
Freshman
Lauren Pettis had 10 points, six rebounds, and two assists without committing a turnover on 4-of-7 shooting. Fellow freshman
Lauren Mills was also 4-of-7 from the field, finishing with nine points, five rebounds and five assists.
USciences got 46 combined points from Irisa Ye and Alex Thomas. Ye scored 20 of her game-high 26 points in the second half and finished with five assists and three steals. Thomas provided 20 points, six rebounds and four assists.
