SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Ariel Jones led four Raiders in double figures with a game-high 26 points on Sunday as the Shippensburg University women's basketball team used a quick start to run past West Virginia Wesleyan, 78-60, in a non-conference matchup from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (2-2) scored 24 points in the first quarter to lead by eight after the opening 10 minutes. The Raiders unfurled a 15-2 run during the third quarter to pull away and lead by as many as 28 points in the second half.
Jones finished with 26 points on 9-of-17 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers. She added five rebounds, five assists and a pair of blocks. Freshman
Aunbrielle Green recorded her first collegiate double-double with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go along with a career-high 10 rebounds.
Sophomore
Kryshell Gordy scored 11 points, going 5-of-5 from the field, to complement five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Freshman
Lauren Mills added a career-high 14 points along with three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Freshman
Lauren Pettis was held to one point but grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots.
The Raiders got to the free-throw line 37 times on Sunday, shooting 54 percent (20-of-37). SU shot 51 percent from the field and posted a 42-16 advantage in points in the paint.
Among the Raider bench contributors included freshman
Nya Searight, who totaled five points (all at the free-throw line) and five rebounds. Freshman
Margarita Kilpatrick scored four points, including a three-pointer.
West Virginia Wesleyan (0-3) recorded 21 offensive rebounds but managed just eight second-chance points. The Bobcats got to the free-throw line, just 10 times, and only made four attempts.
Tyra Hughes paced the visitors with 19 points and had a game-high seven steals. Off the bench, Anastasiya Karaivanova led all players with 12 rebounds.
