SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 5-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team completed its regular season Saturday with a 8-0 victory over Mercyhurst on Senior Day in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup on a blustery day at Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (14-3, 8-2 PSAC) took a commanding four-goal lead in the first half, while not allowing a single shot on goal by the Lakers. Freshman
Adrienne McGarrigle opened the scoring just 26 seconds into the contest, ripping a shot to the left side of the cage. McGarrigle would find the back of the net for her second goal of the game 16 minutes later on a cross from sophomore
Kelly Shulenberger.
Â
Sophomores
Emily Stauffer and
Jazmin Petrantonio accounted for the remaining goals in the first half. Â
Â
Stauffer earned her second goal midway through the second half. After Petrantonio peppered Laker goalkeeper Victoria Triaga with back-to-back shots, Stauffer earned the rebound and buried the ball, giving the Raiders a 5-0 lead.
Â
In the 56th minute, the Raiders coaxed Triaga away from the cage, forcing a defender to cover. A penalty by the defense prevented the Raiders from scoring, causing a penalty stroke. Petrantonio's attempt was good, putting the Raiders ahead by six.
Â
Freshman
Jenna Sluymer and junior
Rosalia Cappadora provided the final two goals for Shippensburg, both as a result of penalty corners. Freshman
Maddie Reuther earned her first collegiate point with an assist on Cappadora's goal.
Â
Redshirt-senior
Ally Mooney was perfect in the outing, earning her fourth shutout of the season, and the 21st of her career. She was not forced to make a save until the second half, when she stopped four shots, including a diving stick save to preserve the shutout.
Â
Shippensburg led Mercyhurst (5-13, 3-7) in shots (37-8) and penalty corners (13-3).
 Â
Before the match, SU honored Mooney, its lone senior. The two-time NFHCA All-American goalkeeper played in her 78th game with the Raiders on Saturday, and improved her career record to 63-15.
Â
Shippensburg, the No. 3 seed in next week's PSAC Championships, will host Bloomsburg in a conference tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday at Robb Sports Complex. The Raiders finished as one of the PSAC's Top 3 teams in the standings for the 11th consecutive season.
