RECAP: Field Hockey Advances to PSAC Semifinals After 2-1 OT Win Over Bloom

Cappadora scores overtime winner to overcome the Huskies

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University field hockey team got a golden goal Tuesday from junior Rosalia Cappadora to complete a comeback and post a 2-1 overtime victory over Bloomsburg in a riveting Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Quarterfinal from a cold and windy Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (15-3) advances to the PSAC Semifinals for the third consecutive season with Tuesday's victory and will face East Stroudsburg on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in a match held at West Chester.

Bloomsburg (11-7) scored the lone goal of the first half at the 7:25 mark when Ali McKay sent a shot 5-hole to give the Huskies the lead. Sophomore Jazmin Petrantonio evened the match with 23 minutes remaining by dribbling around two defenders and scoring her 20th goal of the season.

Both teams traded excellent scoring chances in overtime, including a shot by freshman Adrienne McGarrigle that slammed off the crossbar of the goal cage, before Cappadora ultimately ended it off a penalty corner with 1:36 left in the first extra session. Cappadora fired a low, hard shot from the right side of the arc that ricocheted in off a defender.

The Huskies controlled the pace in the first half, posting a 12-4 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in penalty corners. The Raiders had a 13-5 advantage in shots and 5-2 edge in penalty corners after halftime. Overall, the two teams finished even in shots (17-17) while the visitors notched a 10-9 edge in corners.

Both goaltenders were excellent. Redshirt-senior Ally Mooney made seven saves in the SU victory, while Bloomsburg's Dana Shepley stopped eight shots. Defender Jackie Shragher also had a key defensive save for the Huskies and prefaced McKay's goal with an initial shot that was stopped by Mooney.

It was the second overtime match of the season for each team – SU won 3-2 at Kutztown on Oct. 12 while BU won 2-1 at IUP on Oct. 13.

Tuesday also marked the first meeting between the two teams in the PSAC Tournament since 2015, when the Huskies posted a 3-2 quarterfinal victory over the Raiders at Robb Sports Complex.

UP NEXT: Friday, 3:30 p.m. vs. East Stroudsburg (at West Chester).
