SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 4-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team erased a halftime stalemate with a strong second half Saturday in earning its second consecutive shutout, posting a 3-0 victory over Slippery Rock in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (11-3, 5-2 PSAC) and Slippery Rock (6-9, 1-6) were scoreless through the first 35 minutes of play. The Raiders' best chance of the first half came on a shot by freshman
Adrienne McGarrigle (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) on an open net. However, The Rock's Haley Plitt made a defensive save to prevent a goal.
Â
Sophomore
Sarah Womer broke the stalemate for Shippensburg three minutes into the second half with her first collegiate goal. After a shot by sophomore
Emily Stauffer was blocked, Womer earned the rebound and took a reverse shot that found its way through the goaltender's legs.
Â
Stauffer added a pair of goals later in the half to cement the victory. Her first came on a backhand shot to the right side of the cage in the 52nd minute, giving the Raiders a 2-0 lead. She then found the back of the net again with just 25 seconds remaining by rebounding a shot from McGarrigle.
Â
Shippensburg posted 27 shots, 17 of them on goal. The Rock landed four shots on goal, all stopped by redshirt-senior
Ally Mooney, who earned her 20th career shutout and the third of the season. Corners were 14-6 in SU's favor.
Â
During halftime, Shippensburg recognized more than 15 members of the 2013 national championship team that assembled at Saturday's game to celebrate the five-year anniversary of the team's accomplishment. The 2013 SU Field Hockey squad is the first team to win an NCAA Division II National Championship in the history of Shippensburg University, spanning all sports. A photo gallery is available
