SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team battled back from a 2-0 first-half deficit against West Chester on Wednesday night, but ultimately could not stave off the visitors in dropping a 3-2 decision to the Golden Rams in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from David See Field.
Shippensburg (6-8-1, 5-8-1 PSAC) got a pair of goals in the first half from freshman
Allie Christman – the first two of her collegiate career. The first tally was a header off a corner kick from senior
Mariah Varner. Her second came eight minutes later, as she slammed home a rebound from a shot by senior
Chloe Flemion.
West Chester (10-3-1, 9-3-1) scored two goals in the first 12:22 and later hit a post with another shot before the Raiders answered with Christman's goals. The decisive tally came in the 76th minute, as Jenny Bail finished a cross from Dani Cady for the game-winner.
The Raiders had a few splendid chances for an equalizer late in the match, tilting the field over the final six minutes of play. In the 88th minute, a long entry into the box led to a collision with the goalkeeper and a loose ball, and a shot from sophomore
Taylor Moore that trickled off the post before ultimately being cleared.
WCU finished with a 24-10 edge in total shots, while shots-on-goal were 6-3 in favor of the Golden Rams. The visitors also recorded an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks, including nine taken in the first half.
Freshman
Kasey Doss, making her first collegiate start for the Raiders, was credited with three saves.
Wednesday's result eliminated Shippensburg from PSAC playoff contention. SU has three matches remaining, including two in league play.
