SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team honored its seven seniors on Sunday but could not stave off visiting Millersville, dropping a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match to the Marauders by a 3-1 score from David See Field.
Shippensburg (6-7-1, 5-7-1 PSAC) had its chances against No. 14 Millersville (11-3-0, 10-3-0), but the Marauders struck twice in the opening half to gain the early momentum. The demoralizing tally was the second, which came in the 37th minute. A foul was whistled against the Raiders that resulted in a free kick just outside the box, on which MU scored to take a 2-0 lead.
Following Millersville's first goal (a rocket by Calista Paolino that soared into the upper ninety), SU nearly countered with a goal of its own just five minutes later. A cross found its way to the foot of senior
Keegan White, who ripped a shot past the keeper that was saved by Marauder defender Lauren Hoffman.
Freshman
K.K. O'Donnell scored her fourth goal of the season for SU in the 78th minute, converting a loose ball on a scrum in the box to make the score 2-1. SU then worked a corner shortly after O'Donnell's goal, and the kick by junior
Kelsy Fitzgerald nearly snuck in the far post.
Less than three minutes after O'Donnell's goal, however, Millersville answered with the match's final goal to establish its decisive 3-1 advantage.
Shots on goal finished 15-6 in Millersville's favor, while corner kicks were 7-3 in Shippensburg's favor.
Sophomore
Delaney Shifflett made seven saves for the Raiders but was forced to leave with an injury in the 37th minute that was sustained after being fouled by a Millersville player just a few minutes prior. Freshman
Kasey Doss entered in relief and made five saves in her collegiate debut, working the final 54 minutes of the match.
Before the match, SU honored
Lexi Albert,
Chloe Flemion,
Lauren Krenzke,
Beth McGee,
Kiersten Priest,
Mariah Varner and White in the team's senior ceremony.
