RECAP: Football Gets Back in Win Column With 37-0 Shutout at Ville

SU snaps four-game losing streak with strong defensive performance

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Shippensburg University football team snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday with its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division victory of the season, achieving a 37-0 shutout at Millersville on a cool and breezy afternoon at the Biemesderfer.

Shippensburg (3-4, 1-2 PSAC East) got in the win column despite committing five turnovers Saturday, as the Red Raider defense limited Millersville (2-5, 2-2) to an average of just 2.4 yards per play. SU had 10 total tackles-for-loss (TFLs), including a season-high seven sacks, and limited the Marauders to a 1-of-16 conversion rate on third downs.

The Red Raiders ran for a season-high 258 yards and scored three of their five touchdowns on the ground. Redshirt-senior Marcus Lominy had 19 carries for 91 yards, while senior Chase Yocum had just five carries but ran for 71 yards and a score.

Yocum has now totaled 1,228 career rushing yards, ranking eighth all-time in PSAC history among quarterbacks. He is now 21 rushing yards shy of tying Ryan Zapoticky for SU's school record for career quarterback rushing yards.

Redshirt-senior Richard Nase led SU on the day with nine tackles – including 2.5 TFLs. Nase had 1.5 sacks – bringing his career totals through 39 games to 25.5 sacks and 47.5 TFLs. He is five sacks and 7.5 TFLs shy of Jake Metz's school records in each category.

Redshirt-senior Josh Lister had a pair of sacks – he now has five sacks through seven games this season after having totaled 1.5 career sacks through his first 34 games as a nose tackle.

Senior Tyler Emge, redshirt-sophomore Yuka Onya, redshirt-sophomore Tim Bradley and redshirt-senior John Durkin also contributed to sacks on the day.

SU was also credited with eight pass breakups in the game – including three by redshirt-junior John Chaney III and two by Emge.

Redshirt-freshman quarterback Brycen Mussina finished 16-of-22 for 235 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. After interceptions on the first two drives, Mussina delivered a 10-yard touchdown pass to redshirt-junior Shea O'Donnell that opened the scoring with 6:24 left in the first quarter.

The score remained 7-0 midway through the second quarter, when the Red Raiders captured the momentum by scoring 16 points in the final 7:33 to take a 23-0 lead into the intermission. Redshirt-junior Luke Durkin and Yocum scored rushing touchdowns surrounding the first field goal of the season by freshman David Shank.

SU's second-half touchdowns came via a 24-yard passing play between Mussina and redshirt-freshman Sean Judge late in the third quarter and a 10-yard touchdown run by redshirt-sophomore Raleigh Sirb with 4:27 remaining. The final touchdown was setup by an interception from redshirt-junior Dennis Robinson.

Redshirt-junior Josh Gontarek had three catches for 76 yards – including a 40-yard reception. Redshirt-sophomore Charles Headen III totaled three catches for 43 yards, while redshirt-sophomore Winston Eubanks had three catches for 22 yards. Eight different SU players had a catch on the day.

Millersville drove inside the SU 30-yard line twice in the second half but was stopped on fourth down on each drive. The Marauders passed for 91 yards on the day, with Joey Farley totaling five catches for 53 yards. Farley also missed a 49-yard field goal. MU's leading rusher was quarterback Tony Staffieri, who netted 47 yards on the ground.
