Men’s Basketball Starts Strong to Run Past Bloomsburg on the Road, 75-65

SU gets double-doubles from Sleva, Castello in the victory

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team opened the game on an 11-0 run Wednesday night and got double-doubles from both senior Dustin Sleva and sophomore John Castello as the Raiders posted a 75-65 victory over Bloomsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Nelson Field House.
 
Shippensburg (14-3, 10-2 PSAC) built a 38-25 halftime lead and opened the second half on a 21-7 run to stake itself to a 57-32 advantage with 13:38 remaining. SU hit 11 three-pointers to overcome shooting just 39 percent – its lowest shooting output of the season since the opening weekend.  
 
Sleva posted 21 points and 14 rebounds for his 47th career double-double. Castello scored 15 points, including three three-pointers, to go along with 12 rebounds and three assists.
 
Senior Justin McCarthur moved into SU's all-time Top 10 in scoring with 19 points including three three-pointers. McCarthur. He went past John Smith (1,369 points from 1967-70) into 10th all-time at Shippensburg.
 
Senior Clay Conner had nine points and four assists, while junior Antonio Kellem had five rebounds and five assists.
 
Bloomsburg (10-8, 6-8) entered the game ranked sixth in the PSAC averaging 7.8 three-pointers per game but finished just 4-of-21 (19 percent) from long range, including 1-of-8 in the first half. Christian Mortellite, the No. 5 scorer in the conference, was held without a shot for the first 15:35 and did not score until there was 13:13 left in regulation. He finished with 14 points.
 
Shippensburg hosts Kutztown at 3 p.m. Saturday from Heiges Field House.
