Dustin Sleva and sophomore
John Castello as the Raiders posted a convincing 88-80 victory over Kutztown in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (15-3, 11-2 PSAC) improved to 11-0 at home this season on the strength of 11 three-pointers (including 7-of-14 in the first half) and a pair of big runs in each half to emerge victorious in a rematch of last year's PSAC Championship game.
The Raiders closed the first half on a 24-8 run over the final 9:20 to take a 14-point halftime lead, 43-29. After KU opened the second half on a 10-2 run to get within six points, SU put up a 13-2 counter run to lead by 17 points. Shippensburg led comfortably for the duration, including by 16 points with 39 seconds remaining.
Sleva was tremendous, scoring 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting. The Pittsburgh native was 4-of-4 from three-point range and 3-of-3 at the free-throw line. He matched his season high with 15 rebounds, and led SU with five assists. Sleva also had two emphatic blocks in the second half.
Sleva is now second in the PSAC and sixth in Division II with 12 double-doubles this season. It was his 48th career double-double.
Castello posted his second straight double-double and fifth of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds. In four career games against the Golden Bears, Castello has averaged 14 points and 13 rebounds per game while achieving three double-doubles.
Senior
Justin McCarthur dropped 17 points, going 3-of-5 from three-point range, and had four assists. McCarthur posted double figures for the 16th time in 17 games this season and also the 75th time in his career.
Junior
Antonio Kellem scored 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting to go along with three assists and zero turnovers in 33 minutes of action. Senior
Clay Conner and freshman
Jake Biss each hit a three-pointer and scored five points, while sophomore
Lamar Talley also added a three-pointer.
Kutztown (14-3, 10-4) committed only six turnovers but shot just 6-of-22 (27 percent) from three-point range. The Golden Bears had all five of their starters post double figures and scored more than half of their points (44) in the paint.
Anthony Lee, the nation's most accurate three-point shooter (54.3 percent), missed all four of his attempts on Saturday and finished with 11 points and five assists. Rafiq Marshall, a Cheyney transfer who came within an assist of a triple-double against the Raiders last season with the Wolves, led the visitors with 18 points including three three-pointers.
Shippensburg and East Stroudsburg, the Top 2 teams in the PSAC East, meet up at 8 p.m. Wednesday from Heiges Field House. ESU is the only team to beat the Raiders in the last 12 games.
