SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team had nine different players make a three-pointer on Saturday afternoon as the Raiders coasted to an 84-50 victory over Cheyney in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (11-3, 7-2 PSAC) overcame a sluggish start in the first five minutes of play with an 18-2 run over a seven-minute stretch to take control. SU held a 38-16 lead at the intermission and led by as many as 46 points in the second half.
Every Raider in uniform played at least eight minutes, including 12 players with at least 12 minutes. Senior
Dustin Sleva paced the Raiders with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting in just 19 minutes. Fellow senior
Justin McCarthur had nine points and four assists.
Also among the starters, sophomore
John Castello had six points, eight rebounds and three assists. Junior
Antonio Kellem and senior
Clay Conner combined for nine points on three three-pointers.
Shippensburg got a season-high 46 points from its bench. Sophomore
Lamar Talley was excellent in his 13 minutes of action, scoring a career-high 12 points and matching a career high with three three-pointers. Fellow sophomore and Scotland Performance Institute alum
Na'Quan Council scored 11 points and also hit three three-pointers.
Freshman
Jake Biss had five points, three rebounds and a career-high six assists. Sophomore
Daylon Carter scored seven points on 3-of-6 shooting. Redshirt-freshman
Derek Ford had career highs with four points and four rebounds.
Sophomore
Broguen Nicholas hit a three-pointer and had a pair of assists, while redshirt-freshman
Ja'Tear Gardner got the second bucket of his career.
Junior
Joe Marshall had two points, four rebounds and two steals, while fellow junior
Manny Span had two rebounds and a career-high two assists.
SU finished with 15 three-pointers, one shy of its season high, while attempting a season-high 40 shots from range. The Raiders also tallied a season-high 10 steals and 17 second-chance points.
Cheyney (2-12, 2-8) shot just 30 percent from the field and missed all 12 of its three-point attempts on the day, marking the first time since 2010 that an SU opponent did not make a three-pointer in a game. Jeff Lewis got hot down the stretch to lead the Wolves with 15 points. Cheyney's bench out-scored its starters, 35-15.
Saturday's game lasted just 1 hour, 24 minutes, with the two teams combining for just 19 fouls and 19 free-throw attempts.
Shippensburg hits the road Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game at Mansfield.
