The Shippensburg University men's basketball team played just its second road game in the last 48 days on Wednesday night but came away with a 79-60 victory over Mansfield in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest held at Decker Gymnasium.
Shippensburg (12-3, 8-2 PSAC) opened the game on a 10-0 run in the first four minutes of play en route to its sixth wire-to-wire win of its last nine victories. SU held a 31-23 halftime advantage and used a 15-6 run early in the second half to extend its lead into double digits. The Raiders led by as many as 21 points late in the game.
Senior
Justin McCarthur paced the Raiders with 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting. McCarthur hit three three-pointers during the second-half run to help tilt the game in SU's favor. He also finished with four rebounds and four assists.
Junior
Antonio Kellem also hit three three-pointers on the night, totaling 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Kellem added five rebounds and two assists. Sophomore
John Castello rounded out the Raiders in double figures, scoring 12 points to complement four rebounds. Castello hit two three-pointers in the first half.
Mansfield (4-11, 3-9 PSAC) lost its eighth straight game despite limiting senior
Dustin Sleva to just eight points, snapping a 55-game streak in which the Pittsburgh native had posted double figures. Sleva, the PSAC's top rebounder, led all players with 11 boards on the night.
Senior
Clay Conner had six points and five assists for the Raiders, while sophomore
Lamar Talley scored five points in a strong first-half effort off the bench. Junior
Manny Span contributed four points and a pair of rebounds.
SU, the PSAC's leader in three-pointers per game, made 12 on the night and has connected on at least eight three-pointers in every game this season. The Raiders finished with 15 assists and just 10 turnovers, marking the 13th time in 14 games this season the team has posted a positive assist-to-turnover ratio.
Shippensburg returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday when it hosts No. 18 West Chester from Heiges Field House.
