SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg University cross country coach
Steve Spence '85 extended his impressive streak of running sub-5:00 minute miles to 43 consecutive years on Friday night, a feat that is believed to be the longest-running of its kind in the United States of America per Runner's World magazine.
Spence achieved the feat at dusk on the Shippensburg University track. He completed his mile in 4:56. Members of the SU cross country team served as pacesetters.
It was a somewhat impromptu attempt for Spence, who took advantage of the unseasonably pleasant winter day to complete his sub-5:00 mile. With temperatures for most of the day in the 50s, Spence ultimately decided in the early afternoon to go through with his attempt after the morning winds began to subside.
The run was documented on cell-phone video, and is available
