SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team had a heartbreaking setback in double overtime on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 4-3 decision to league rival East Stroudsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from David See Field.
Shippensburg (3-4-2, 1-2 PSAC) held a 3-1 lead with less than 20 minutes to play after scoring twice in a six-minute span of the second half, but East Stroudsburg (4-2-1, 2-2 PSAC) countered with three unanswered goals to ultimately edge the Raiders with just 1:04 remaining in the contest.
SU got on the board first in the eighth minute with a header from junior
Patrick Luebben who finished off a beautiful cross from sophomore
Isiah Dorsey. East Stroudsburg found an equalizer in the 40th minute to even the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.
The Raiders took the lead in the 59th minute after Dorsey found sophomore
Colin Marks, who wasted little time in finding the back of the net from the middle of the box.
Junior
Cole Kropnick added to the Raider advantage with a high-bending free kick in the 66th minute. The tally was Kropnick's eighth of the season – his third off a free kick – and gives him the most goals a single season by a Raider since 2013 (Derrick Roy, 11).
The Warriors ramped up the pressure down the stretch, scoring off a rebound in the 72nd minute and tying the game with just 90 seconds left in regulation with a finish off a wild scrum resulting from a foul just outside the box.
The unseasonable heat Wednesday afternoon resulted in increased chippiness and physical play down the stretch. Another frenzied sequence in the final 80 seconds resulted in a foul on the Raiders, and ESU's Jo Panuccio ripped a free kick into the net to give East Stroudsburg the victory.
Junior goalkeeper
Matt Harder made a career-high 11 saves for the Raiders in the loss. It is the second time this season that Harder has recorded 10 or more saves in a match.
Shippensburg is next in action at 1 p.m. Saturday at Seton Hill.
