The Shippensburg University women's soccer team defeated Chestnut Hill on Monday afternoon in its final non-conference matchup of the season, 1-0, on a warm and sunny afternoon in Philadelphia.
Shippensburg (2-3-1) held advantages in all of the major statistical categories over Chestnut Hill (1-5); tallying a 35-8 advantage in shots and a 14-3 edge in shots on goal. The Raiders also took 10 corners compared to just one by the Griffins.
SU pressured the Griffins for the majority of the first half, but were unable to breakthrough despite taking 18 shots (six on goal).
In the 65th minute, junior
Lexi Albert found the back off the net after heading home a scoring chance off a corner taken by junior
Beth McGee. It was the first points of the season for both women.
One goal was all redshirt-freshman goalkeeper
Courtney Merwin needed, as she made three saves to record her a shutout and win in her collegiate debut. Her third and final save came in the 89th minute of play.
Offensively, sophomores
Isabella Weigel and
Kelsy Fitzgerald paced the Raiders offensively recording six and five shots respectively.
Shippensburg will return to action at 1 p.m. Friday in Gannon for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup.
