The Shippensburg University women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime on Saturday, as home-standing Clarion scored a golden goal in the final minute of play to defeat the Raiders, 2-1, from Memorial Stadium.
Shippensburg (1-3-1, 1-3-0 PSAC) was headed toward a loss in regulation on Saturday when senior
Bailey Bzdak scored the tying goal as the final horn was sounding – the tally came with literally tenths of a second remaining on the clock.
Bzdak's goal came in her first appearance of the season; she worked as a reserve forward in her first game back from injury.
Clarion (3-3-1, 2-3-1) had two great scoring chances in double overtime, and ultimately converted on the second. The Golden Eagles caged the winner with 48 seconds remaining to win the match.
Golden Eagle goalkeeper Krista Mosi was a big reason the match made it into overtime – as she made eight second-half saves against the Raiders. Shippensburg out-shot Clarion 11-4 over the final 45 minutes of regulation.
Overall, Clarion held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks – with only one of those occurring after the first half. SU held Clarion to just 12 shots, five of which came in the first half.
Freshman
Delaney Shifflett was credited with three saves in goal.
Shippensburg returns to action at 4 p.m. Monday when it travels to Chestnut Hill for a non-conference matchup with the Griffins.
