SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team opened its 2017 season on Thursday afternoon with a 2-2 draw against Mountain East Conference opponent West Virginia Wesleyan in a regional showdown from David See Field.
Shippensburg (0-0-1) and West Virginia Wesleyan (0-0-1) played a competitive, statistically even matchup in what could prove to be a key regional contest down the road. The Bobcats finished with a 16-15 advantage in shots, while the Raiders held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The visitors opened the scoring just seven minutes in, when Kelsie Hibbs converted a splendid through ball from Jennafer Alonge. Just 77 seconds later, the Raiders equaled the score with sophomore
Kelsy Fitzgerald lofting a shot into the top of the goal off a feed from senior
Mallory Patterson.
Wesleyan would hold a 2-1 lead at the intermission, as Madison LaPole put the Bobcats ahead.
Senior
Kat Hartner, SU's team captain in 2017, knotted the score at 2-2 by bending a corner kick into the net in the 56th minute.
Despite some competitive chances by each team in the overtime, the match would remain equal after 110 minutes.
Freshman goalkeeper
Delaney Shifflett was strong in her collegiate debut, making six saves in the contest. Shifflett recorded a key save in the 94th minute, making a point-blank stop on a header deep in the box.
Shippensburg opens Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at 12:30 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Edinboro from David See Field.
