Baseball Takes Two from No. 17 Millersville on Senior Day, 2-1 and 8-0

Goertzen hits walk-off single in Game 1; Mosser and Menders combine for shutout in Game 2

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team used a walk-off single from sophomore Jack Goertzen in Game 1 and a dominant outing from junior Gabe Mosser in Game 2 to sweep its doubleheader against No. 17 Millersville, 2-1 and 8-0, on a rainy Senior Day from Fairchild Field.

With its two wins Saturday over Millersville (31-16, 14-12 PSAC), Shippensburg (27-19-1, 18-8 PSAC) has now won eight straight conference games.

Sophomore Cash Gladfelter had a standout day at the dish going 5-for-6 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored. Senior Ryan McMillen went 3-for-6 including a lead-off home run in Game 2 in his final two games at Fairchild Field.

Juniors Grant Hoover and Dalton Hoiles were the other two Raiders to record multi-hit days at the plate with Hoover driving in one and Hoiles driving in three.

Senior Mark Curtis started on the bump in Game 1 before being relieved by junior Andy Crum who eventually collected the win. Mosser started Game 2 and got the win with freshman Jacob Menders throwing one shutout inning in relief.

Shippensburg will wrap up its regular season tomorrow with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Millersville.

Game 1

Curtis was sensational in his last career start at Fairchild Field before having to exit with an injury in the fifth. The senior gave up just two hits in four shutout innings while striking out four.

The Raiders got on the board first on a RBI fielder's choice from Hoiles that scored Gladfelter. Millersville tied the game in fifth on a RBI groundout from Ted Williams.

Crum relieved Curtis and threw three innings without allowing and earned run, striking out two, to give SU a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Junior Nick Spangler started the seventh with a leadoff walk. Gladfelter followed him with single to left field to put runners on first and second with nobody out. After a wild pitch allowed both runners to move up, Millersville chose to walk senior Jake Kennedy to load the bases with no outs.

After the Marauders recorded the first out, Goertzen followed with a line drive, walk-off single to right to give SU the 2-1 victory.

Game 2

SU got off to a fast start with a leadoff home run for McMillen over the left field fence. It was the senior's fifth home run of the year.

The Raiders would add five runs in the third to blow the game open. Hoiles recorded two RBIs on a single through the left side scoring Spangler and McMillen. Three batters later, sophomore Drew Bene doubled to left scoring Hoiles giving the Raiders a 4-0 advantage.

After Goertzen scored on a wild pitch, Hoover capped the five-run inning off with a single to center scoring Bene. Gladfelter added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings with RBI singles to left field stretching the Raider lead to 8-0.

That was all the runs Mosser needed to secure his sixth win of the year. The junior pitched six shutout innings, scattering two hits while striking out four. Menders came on to pitch the seventh and struck out two to Marauders to preserve the shutout.
