Baseball Drops PSAC East Doubleheader to East Stroudsburg

Kennedy and Spangler collect three hits each for SU

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team dropped a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division games Saturday to East Stroudsburg on a wet and dreary day from Fairchild Field.

Shippensburg (19-18-1, 10-8 PSAC) rallied late but fell short to fall 4-3 in Game 1 to East Stroudsburg (18-16-1, 8-9-1). The Warriors tallied 11 hits in Game 2 to defeat the Raiders 10-3.

Senior Jake Kennedy and junior Nick Spangler both recorded three hits on the afternoon. Kennedy's three hits came in Game 1 when the senior first basemen doubled twice and drove in two runs for SU.

Spangler finished the day 3-for-7 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Sophomores Tommy Baggett, Jack Goertzen and Cash Gladfelter each recorded two hits on the day.

Junior Gabe Mosser started on the mound for the Raiders in Game 1 with junior Andy Crum pitching out of the bullpen. Freshman Jacob Menders started Game 2 for SU with redshirt-freshman Zack Sims, freshman Zach Amisano and freshman Jack Jenkens all logging innings out of the pen.

Shippensburg will wrap up its four-game set with East Stroudsburg Sunday at 1 p.m. from Fairchild Field. SU will be the visitors for both games tomorrow.

Game 1

East Stroudsburg jumped out in front with two runs in top of the first. SU cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth when Kennedy singled to left scoring Spangler.

The Warriors extended their lead with two more runs in the top of the fifth. SU would respond however, with two runs of their own in the home half of the fifth. Spangler singled up the middle to score Baggett. Two batters later, Kennedy doubled to right-center field to score Spangler to bring SU to within a run.

The Raiders were able to get the tying and go-ahead runs on in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to capitalize and ultimately dropped Game 1, 4-3.

Mosser threw five innings scattering six hits while striking out six. Crum pitched two scoreless innings for SU, striking out three.

Game 2

East Stroudsburg jumped ahead early and never looked back. The Warriors scored three runs in the first two innings to jump out to a 6-0 lead.

SU got on the board in the third when Gladfelter singled up the middle to drive in two. However, East Stroudsburg would get those two back in the following half inning and two more in top of the sixth to make it 10-2 with six outs to get.

Goertzen singled up the middle in the bottom of sixth to score junior Dalton Hoiles to give the Raiders their third run of the game. SU eventually fell by a final score of 10-3.

Sims pitched three innings in relief striking out four. Amisano logged one inning in relief while Jenkens pitched two clean innings to finish the game for SU.
