SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's tennis team opened its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division schedule with a victory over Kutztown, 6-3, on a sunny and pleasant afternoon from the Robb Sports Complex Tennis Courts.
Shippensburg (3-5, 1-0 PSAC East) won twice in doubles (No. 2 and No. 3) and four times in singles (No. 3 through No. 6) to edge Kutztown (2-8, 0-3). Last season, the Golden Bears won 7-2, winning all six singles matches.
Sophomore
Kaylin Gallagher and senior
Emilie Luttman teamed up for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. It's the fifth victory for the pairing this season, including the fourth at No. 2 doubles.
The freshmen duo of
Madeline Carson and freshman
Daisy Rundio posted an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles. It is the second straight win in as many matches for the pairing.
All four Raider women achieved singles victories. Luttman posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles for the match-clinching victory; she rallied from a 3-4 deficit in the second set with two break points to rally for the win.
Gallagher endured several long rallies in her match at No. 5 singles, finally earning a late break in the second set to post a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Rundio was confident in an impressive No. 6 singles victory, posting a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. Carson, meanwhile, was elevated to No. 4 singles and notched a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Freshman
Catherine Miller battled to an excellent performance at No. 1 singles, taking the second 6-3, but falling two sets to one. Miller and sophomore
Gabbie Binder teamed up to win a game at No 1 doubles as well.
Shippensburg is back in action at 2 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts West Chester for a PSAC East clash from the Robb Sports Complex Tennis Courts.
