SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University lacrosse team put forth a tremendous defensive effort Saturday against visiting Alderson Broaddus, forcing 31 turnovers, and scored 11 first-half goals in a 16-3 rout of the Battlers from Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (3-0) stifled Alderson Broaddus (2-1), tilting the field and scoring early and often on a cold and breezy afternoon. Senior
Amanda Frank paced the scoring with four goals and two assists as one of five Raiders with multiple goals on the day. Seniors
Ali Harclerode and
Max Barkley, junior
Allison Fugate and freshman
Morgan Whiteside each scored twice on the day.
Â
But the story of the day was the defense. Sophomore
Valerie Hertz was nothing short of extraordinary – recording an incredible seven caused turnovers and six draw controls to go along with three groundballs. Hertz's seven caused turnovers in nine years and the most by a Raider since Gayle Kuntzmann had seven on Apr. 26, 2008. No Raider had more than four caused turnovers in the game over the last six years.
Â
Senior
Annemarie Cericola had six groundballs, while junior
Makenzie Magnotta and sophomore
Kyra Shank each had three. Frank's all-around effort also included three groundballs in addition to her six points.
Â
Other goal scorers on the day for the Raiders included juniors
Jordan Kengor and
Kathleen Mirgon and sophomores
Madi Newman and
Morgan Stone. Mirgon's goal is the first of her career, coming in her 26th collegiate game.
Â
SU's passing was crisp, resulting in eight assists. Sophomore
Maggie Lawshe, Frank and Newman each had two assists, while Fugate and Shank each had one.
Â
Sophomore
Bridgette Morrissey made one first-half save en route to the victory. Freshman
Laney Ballard made three saves in the second half and yielded just one goal.
Â
Overall, Shippensburg recorded a 38-8 edge in shots, 30-16 advantage in groundballs, and a 13-7 margin in draw controls. SU also forced seven errant clears by the Battlers.
Â
Shippensburg returns to action at 3 p.m. Friday when it faces Findlay from Robb Sports Complex.
