SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Allison Fugate scored a golden goal with 10 seconds remaining in the first overtime on Friday to propel the Shippensburg University lacrosse team to a 10-9 comeback victory over Findlay on a frigid, windy and snowy afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (4-0) trailed Findlay (1-3) by a 9-7 score with 10:43 to play but kept the Oilers off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest. SU got a goal from senior
Amanda Frank with 3:09 remaining to get within one of the visitors.
Â
After a big save by sophomore
Bridgette Morrissey with 1:42 remaining, the Raiders advanced up the field, called a timeout, and came out of the break with senior
Max Barkley making a power move toward the cage that equaled the score at 9-9 with 1:16 left in regulation.
Â
Findlay had chances to claim victory both at the end of regulation and in overtime, but the Raiders thwarted each opportunity. With 10 seconds left, the visitors were awarded a free position yet the ensuing shot was blocked from behind by the defense.
Â
The Oilers won the hotly-contested draw to start overtime and worked the clock for more than two minutes in the offensive zone without any action. Findlay earned a free position with 44 seconds left in the first overtime, but attempted a pass in lieu of a shot, and the Raiders scooped up the loose ball. After a run down the field, Barkley got free for a shot that was stopped, but Fugate picked up the rebound and scored to give SU the victory.
Â
The two teams were evenly matched both through regulation and on the stat sheet. SU managed a 13-8 edge in draw controls, including a 9-1 advantage in the second half, but otherwise the two teams played within one turnover and two shots of each other.
Â
Morrissey made several key stops in goal to help the Raiders to the victory. She recorded a career-high 10 saves, an amount larger than her combined saves total through the first three games (nine). SU's defense also recorded 12 caused turnovers, including three by sophomore
Valerie Hertz and two each by senior
Annemarie Cericola and sophomore
Madi Newman.
Â
Barkley had six draw controls, while Hertz had five draw controls and five groundballs. Cericola, senior
Ali Harclerode, junior
Makenzie Magnotta and senior
Julia Wise each had three groundballs.
Â
Fugate, Frank, Harclerode and sophomore
Kyra Shank each scored twice for the Raiders, with Barkley and junior
Jordan Kengor also adding tallies. Frank finished with five points, contributing three assists.
Â
Findlay was paced by a hat trick from Brie Caruso and 11 saves from goaltender Claire Ferrell.
Â
Shippensburg's 4-0 start is its best beginning to a season since 2004 under Coach Bertie Landes.
Â
The Raiders return to action at 3 p.m. Wednesday versus Philadelphia from Robb Sports Complex.
