The Shippensburg University softball team dropped a pair of one-run games on Sunday, as the Raiders fell 2-1 and 5-4 at Pitt-Johnstown in a conference crossover doubleheader from the V.E. Erickson Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (15-10) collected 16 hits as a team, with six Raiders collecting multiple knocks on the day. Junior
Macy Luck was the team's pacesetter at the plate, singling four times and stealing a base. Freshman
Meghan Klee had two hits, including a solo home run.
Â
Pitt-Johnstown (8-6) scored both of its runs in the opener on a two-run home run in the third inning. Junior
Maddie Mulhall had hit a sacrifice fly in the top half of the inning to give the Raiders an early lead.
Â
Sophomore
Nicole Smith started the opener, pitching 2.1 innings. Fellow sophomore
Julia Tosti threw 3.2 shutout innings of relief, striking out four. A leadoff double in the fourth by junior
Chloe Collins proved to be the last hit of the game for SU, as UPJ starter Melissa Wagner retired the final 12 batters she faced.
Â
The Raiders fell behind 4-0 in Game 2 but rallied to tie the score in the sixth inning. Klee's home run got SU on the board in the third inning, and the Raiders added two more in the fourth. Freshman
Micaela Ghanayem delivered an RBI single, and freshman pinch runner
Maddie McConnell later scored on an errant throw when Ghanayem stole second base.
Â
Shippensburg tied the score in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by freshman
Kendall Geis, but the Lady Cats answered in the bottom half of the inning with an unearned run. Collins went the distance in the circle, striking out two in a complete-game effort.
Â
Luck, Ghanayem, Klee, Geis and freshman
Emily Zaring all had multiple hits in Game 2.
Â
Shippensburg will begin PSAC Eastern Division play at 2:30 p.m. Friday when it hosts Kutztown in a doubleheader at Robb Field.
