SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team received complete-game pitching performances Saturday from junior
Chloe Collins and sophomore
Taryn Wilson to sweep a doubleheader over visiting IUP, 2-0 and 6-3, on a mild afternoon in the home opener from Robb Field.
Â
Shippensburg (15-8) was playing for the first time in two weeks but was undaunted, cranking out 14 hits in the doubleheader and walking just three batters from the pitching circle. SU extended its winning streak over IUP (8-9) to seven consecutive games dating back to 2013.
Â
Collins had a banner day, going 4-for-7 at the plate with a home run, two doubles, three RBIs and a stolen base in addition to throwing her second collegiate shutout. She allowed just four hits and two walks in pitching Saturday's opener, striking out four in the complete-game victory.
Â
Her shutout was preserved by working out of two major threats, as Collins stranded runners at first and third with one out in the third by working a pop-up and a groundout before inducing a 5-2-3 double play in the fifth inning to escape a bases-loaded jam. Â
Â
Wilson allowed three runs on 10 hits in the nightcap but walked just one – striking out a season-high eight hitters in the process. It is the second-most strikeouts in a start for Wilson, whose career high remains 10 against Ferris State on Mar. 6, 2016.
Â
The Raiders plated the only runs of the opener in the third inning. Junior
Anna Warfield led off with a double and scored two batters later on a wild pitch. With two outs, freshman
Emily Zaring snuck a single up the middle that scored freshman
Kayla Bonawitz.
Â
In the nightcap, Collins blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning after junior
Tara Bicko had worked a two-out walk. SU added three in the second, beginning with junior
Macy Luck singling home junior
Maddie Mulhall. Luck later scored on a double steal, and Bicko hit a sacrifice fly that scored Bonawitz.
Â
Bonawitz had two hits, two stolen bases and scored two runs. Zaring had two hits and a walk, while freshman
Meghan Klee also had two hits on the day. Ten of SU's 11 players to earn a start on the day reached base at least one time, including Bicko, who drew three walks. The Raiders finished the day with five steals, two successful sacrifices and six walks.
Â
Saturday's games were originally scheduled to be played at IUP, but field conditions resulted in the teams switching sites to Robb Field after a decision was made Friday afternoon.
Â
Shippensburg will travel to Johnstown tomorrow for an 11 a.m. doubleheader with UPJ.Â
