The Shippensburg University softball team won twice Friday to kick off a two-day stay at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament in Salem, Va. The Raiders rallied to defeat Winston-Salem State, 10-8, before routing Salem International in five innings, 13-2.

Shippensburg (11-7) cranked out 25 hits on the day, including a 5-of-6 effort from freshman
Kayla Bonawitz and four hits from freshman
Emily Zaring. Bonawitz had three RBIs, two stolen bases and scored five runs. Zaring hit a homer, doubled and had three RBIs on the day.

Meghan Klee and sophomore
Courtney Cochran each had three hits on the day, with Cochran going 3-for-3 with three runs against Salem International. Luck scored four runs on the day.

Shippensburg is set to play three games Saturday in Salem: 10 a.m. versus West Liberty, 2 p.m. versus University of the Sciences, and 4 p.m. versus Lincoln Memorial.
Game 1: Shippensburg 10, Winston-Salem 8

Shippensburg was able to win despite allowing four home runs to the Rams. A six-run fifth inning put WSSU up 8-5 before Zaring homered in the bottom of the frame to make it 8-6. SU scored four runs in the sixth – a Luck RBI double, a two-out, two-run single from Collins, and a two-out RBI double by Zaring.

Taryn Wilson earned a no-decision, striking out five in 4.1 innings. Fellow sophomore
Julia Tosti earned a win in relief, allowing two runs and striking out five in 2.2 innings.

Game 2: Shippensburg 13, Salem Int'l 2 (5 innings)

Shippensburg scored multiple runs in all four of its at-bats against the Tigers, including a five-run third inning. Eight of the 13 runs scored by SU, however, were unearned.

Maddie Mulhall delivered a pinch-hit, two-run double. Bonawitz also had two RBIs; six different Raiders had at least one RBI in the game.
