SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team returned to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Saturday, dropping a 69-60 decision to visiting Gannon from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (1-7, 0-3 PSAC) got a game-high 24 points from freshman
Ariel Jones, including 18 in the second half. Senior
Kristin McGeough was strong in the post in recording the second double-double of her career, scoring 11 points and collecting a career-high 15 rebounds.
Gannon (5-3, 3-0) led 14-5 after the first quarter, a deficit from which the Raiders were never able to overcome despite chipping away for the majority of the contest. SU got to 14-13 with 5:26 left in the second quarter, but the Golden Knights countered with a 15-8 run over the final 4:24 of the half to lead 29-21 at the intermission.
The Raiders embarked upon a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter to get within three points, 52-49, with 6:01 remaining. Shippensburg made five consecutive shots from the field during the stretch, and also held Gannon without a field goal over the final 4:37 of the contest, but the Golden Knights sealed the win by making 9-of-10 from the free-throw line in the final minute.
Freshman forward
Kryshell Gordy had an excellent all-around stat line with seven points, 10 rebounds and a career-high five assists. It is the second double-digit rebounding effort of the year for Gordy.
Redshirt-sophomore
Gabriela Blackburn had five points, four assists and two steals. Freshman
Lili Benzel hit a pair of three-pointers off the bench in three attempts. Senior
Victoria Blackburn returned to action with five points.
The Raiders shot 42 percent from the field, overcoming a tough first quarter from the field by shooting 58 percent (14-of-24) in the second half. SU made four three-pointers in the fourth quarter, and finished with six trifectas overall.
Shippensburg hosts Clarion at 1 p.m. Sunday from Heiges Field House.
