Volleyball Drops Conference Quarterfinal at Pitt-Johnstown, 3-0

SU will now await Monday’s NCAA selection show to see if season continues

The Shippensburg University volleyball team faced Pitt-Johnstown for the second time in four days on Tuesday night, but the Raiders were defeated in straight sets by the Mountain Cats, 25-20, 25-19, 27-25, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Quarterfinal from Sports Center.

Shippensburg (21-11) had three players finish with double-digit kills but swung just .125 from the floor as a team. Sophomore Kendall Johnson led the Raiders with 11 kills, while junior Morgan DeFloria and sophomore Gabriella Johnson each added 10 kills.

Sophomore Megan Forstburg paced the squad with 19 digs, while freshman Emily Hangen recorded 35 assists. Gabriella Johnson notched her third straight double-double and eighth overall this season, adding 18 digs to go along with her 10 kills. Sophomore Samantha Webber contributed eight kills and two blocks.

Pitt-Johnstown (24-8) out-blocked the Raiders, 9-3, and committed seven less attack errors. Senior outside hitter Marissa Erminio had a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs. Maura Brehl had 10 kills, while Caitlin Vrabel had a hand in six blocks.

A close first set had neither team lead by more than three points until Pitt-Johnstown closed the frame on a 5-0 run. SU committed 11 of its 22 attack errors in the second set, but was still within one point at 14-13 before UPJ scored six of the next eight points to pull away. The third set featured 13 ties, and the Raiders had a set point at 25-24, but UPJ countered with the final three points for the win.

Shippensburg will now await the results of the NCAA Selection Show, which is scheduled to air at 7:30 p.m. Monday on ncaa.com. The Raiders will have a better grasp of their standing in the region tomorrow, when the newest edition of the Atlantic Region rankings are released.
