SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team put forth a late rally Saturday night but fell to Bowie State, 73-64, in Game 7 of the 2017 Wolf's Bus Lines Classic from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (0-2) battled Bowie State (2-0) all evening long, holding the Bulldogs to 14 points in the first, second and fourth quarters. The visitors out-scored the Raiders 31-14 in the third quarter to sway the momentum, but SU closed the game on a 14-2 run as they clawed back into the contest.
Freshman
Ariel Jones filled up the score sheet once again in just her second career collegiate game. Jones finished with a game high and new career highs of 27 points and seven rebounds. The freshman shot 5-of-7 from three-point range, including a half-court shot at the end of the first quarter, and was 10-of-18 from the field on the day.
Fellow freshman
Kryshell Gordy was the only other Raider to score in double-figures with 10 points. Gordy also grabbed six rebounds and tallied three assists. Both Jones (51 points in two games) and Gordy (22 points, 17 rebounds in two games) were named to the 2017 Wolf's Bus Lines Classic All-Tournament Team after the contest.
Senior center
Kristin McGeough finished the game with eight points for SU. Freshman
Lili Benzel added six points.
SU came out firing all cylinders and opened the game with a 12-4 run over the first five minutes of play. Bowie State rallied in the second quarter and ultimately took a 28-27 lead into the break.
Bowie State's Kyah Proctor proved to be too much as she led the Bulldogs to the victory, finishing with a team-high 17 points. Proctor was named Wolf's Bus Lines Classic Tournament MVP. Shippensburg finished the day shooting 24-of-56 (42.9 percent) from the field and made 10-of-14 free throws in the loss.
Shippensburg will return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when it will go on the road to take on Slippery Rock in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup.
