No. 1 Field Hockey Outlasts Mercyhurst in Regular-Season Finale, 4-3

SU will host West Chester or Bloomsburg in PSAC Semifinals on Friday

The Shippensburg University field hockey team capped off the regular season Saturday with a 4-3 road victory at Mercyhurst, surviving a furious comeback by the Lakers in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Tullio Field.

Shippensburg (14-3, 9-1 PSAC) led 4-0 with 25 minutes remaining before Mercyhurst (7-11, 2-8) answered with three tallies to get within one goal of the Raiders in the final six minutes. SU held the hosts without a shot over the final 5:16 to emerge with the win.

At halftime, Shippensburg had posted an 18-1 advantage in shots and a 10-0 advantage in penalty corners. The Lakers countered with a 5-4 margin in second-half corners and equaled the Raiders in second-half shots (7-7).

Penalty corners proved to be key on Saturday. SU scored three of its four goals off corners, while Mercyhurst scored all three of its goals off corners.

Senior Lauren Zengulis opened the scoring at the 7:23 mark off an assist from senior Brooke Sheibley. Zengulis also hit the post with a shot in the final minutes of the contest.

Six minutes later, senior Kylie Huffman scored off a corner to make it 2-0 in SU's favor. The Raiders led 3-0 at the intermission by scoring on a penalty corner as the first-half clock expired, with Sheibley assisting senior Madison Scarr on her fifth goal of the season.

Six minutes into the second half, freshman Jazmin Petrantonio scored off a penalty corner to give the Raiders a 4-0 lead. Mercyhurst earned all five of its penalty corners after falling behind by four goals, scratching and clawing back into the match by making the most of its scoring opportunities.

Redshirt-junior Ally Mooney got the win in goal, making two saves and yielding two goals in 54:01 of action. Senior Catherine Matuszko made two saves and allowed one goal over the final 15:59 of play.

Shippensburg will host the 2017 PSAC Field Hockey Championships on Friday and Sunday from Robb Sports Complex. SU will host West Chester or Bloomsburg at 1 p.m. Friday.
