SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Colin Marks scored a golden goal with 33 seconds left in double overtime on Saturday to conclude the regular season in style, sending the Shippensburg University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Slippery Rock on Senior Day from David See Field.
Shippensburg (7-8-2, 5-6 PSAC) put forth a consistent, steady attack against Slippery Rock (5-10-3, 3-6-2) throughout the contest – finishing with a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks – but the Raiders did not find the back of the net until the final minute. A throw-in made its way to junior
Cole Kropnick, who headed a pass into space that Marks rocketed into the lower right corner for the decisive tally.
The victory sent SU's four seniors out in style, as the Raiders honored defenders
Jamie Blair and
Jan Striewe, goalkeeper
Matt Harder and student assistant coach
Jake Gillespie before the match.
Blair and Striewe each nearly headed home tallies during the contest, plus Striewe nearly rifled a shot into the upper ninety. Harder made six saves for his second shutout of the season. The seniors have contributed to 26 victories over the last four years.
Shippensburg concluded the season with its most points in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings since making the NCAA Tournament back in 2013. The Raiders posted 15 league points, tying for sixth place in the conference, but missed out on a playoff berth due to Seton Hill holding a head-to-head tiebreaker.
