No. 1 Field Hockey Earns PSAC Regular-Season Title After 2-1 Win Over #3 Ville

SU will host the PSAC Championships next weekend at Robb Sports Complex

The No. 1-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team clinched the 2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) regular season title on Wednesday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over No. 3-ranked Millersville in another competitive matchup from the Biemesderfer.

Shippensburg (13-3, 8-1 PSAC) secured the PSAC's No. 1 seed and the right to host next week's conference championships by virtue of head-to-head wins in conference play over Millersville (13-4, 7-2) and East Stroudsburg (13-3, 6-2) and only having one game remaining on the schedule. MU and ESU have clinched playoff berths, while four other teams are vying for the remaining three spots in the tournament.

The Raiders led 1-0 at halftime after getting the ninth goal of the season by senior Mary Spisak at the 18-minute mark. Spisak capitalized on a one-on-one matchup and shot low past MU keeper Kylee Bair.

The Marauders answered eight minutes into the second half, as Aliza Mizak scored her seventh goal of the season by knocking home the feed of Kyra Brakefield that resulted from a broken play on the edge of the field.

SU then applied a counter-attack, which eventually led to the game-winning goal with 13:33 to play. Senior Brooke Sheibley forced a turnover around the MU 25-yard line that led to a fast break, and senior Emily Barnard knocked home Sheibley's feed from the center of the box while on the run to make it 2-1.

MU nearly took the lead right before the Raiders seized it, as Sol Kreiner-Ortiz ripped a rocket of a reverse hit from the edge of the top of the scoring arc that rattled off the post. Shippensburg's ensuing move up the field led to the go-ahead goal.

SU finished with a 20-7 total edge in shots, an 11-2 edge in penalty corners and a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Redshirt-junior goalkeeper Ally Mooney made three saves for the Raiders, while Bair finished with four for the Marauders.

Shippensburg concludes the regular season at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mercyhurst.

REGIONAL RANKINGS: The NCAA released its second edition of the Atlantic Region Rankings Wednesday morning, with the committee slotting East Stroudsburg ahead of Shippensburg and Millersville. Another ranking will be released next week in advance of the PSAC Tournament, which will likely go a long way in determining the final order of the Atlantic Region's top teams. A rundown of the regional ranking criteria is available HERE.
